The SSA's response to NPR series on the disability program

NPR vs. the SSA
There's a war waging between National Public Radio (NPR) and the Social Security Administration (SSA). The subject? Disability. And reporter Chana Joffe-Walt is right in the middle of it.

Disability2_06132014Jeoffe-Walt aired a series "Unfit for Work" on NPR about her perceived abuses within the disability (DI) system. A recent statement from the Consortium for Citizens with Disabilities (CCD) says the series, "paints a misleading and inaccurate picture of the Social Security programs."

Statistics on Social Security Disability

Specifically the statement reports that:

  • 1 in 5 Americans live with disabilities. One in 10 has a severe disability
Despite these odds, most applicants for Social Security disability benefits are denied. Not even 40% of adult applicants are approved.
  • Similarly, few children are approved (only 1.6% of US children). And the statement goes on to cite the expenses parents undertake to raise a child with a disability.
  • An open letter from the former Commissioners of the SSA says that "extensive documentation and medical evidence" is required at all levels of the rigorous application process.

Social Security Disability Growth Explained

Both sources say that the growth in SSDI Jeoffe-Walt reported was expected and is due to 1) baby boomers entering their high-disability years and 2) the influx of women that entered the workforce in the 1970's and 80's and are now "insured" for disability.

They further cite that the rise in children receiving SSI benefits is due to more children living in poverty (and thereby qualifying for SSI) since the economic decline.
